When Hamilton Friends chose Cesar Alvarez to be a 2008 Hammie Winner he became the first Hammie winner to come from North Dakota and the first Native American Hammie Winner. As it turns out, being the first to do things is not unusual for Cesar. Cesar is first in his class academically and established the first local chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). He was the first person from his community and also the first Native American to be chosen for the prestigious North Dakota Governor’s School and, most notably, Cesar will be the first person in his family to attend college. While Cesar has been the first on many occasions, his personality and character go beyond breaking barriers. Cesar’s involvement in his school and his community prove that he is a deeply caring, thoughtful and dedicated leader. In addition to the achievements mentioned above Cesar is president of his school’s chapter of AISES (American Indians in Science and Engineering), he is heavily involved with the Affiliated Tribes Boys and Girls Clubs, he is the vice president and public relations coordinator for the Keystone Group through the NATIVE (Native American Teens in Vital Empowerment) Youth Council and he has participated in most of the sports offered at his high school. “What really drives me and keeps me motivated to stay on my path…is my heritage and knowing who and what I'm representing,” said Cesar. “I love representing my people and speaking on their behalf. I love knowing that people look up to me and that they respect me. It truly is a rewarding experience serving as an ambassador for not only my school, but also, more importantly, my people of the Three Affiliated Tribes. I never forget my identity.” Currently Cesar is a senior at New Town High School in New Town, North Dakota. He resides with his grandmother and in addition to keeping up with his current school work obligations he is finishing up his college applications. Once in college, Cesar hopes to pursue his interest in political science, business and law. |
